Ibo Island Travel Tips

Please download our PDF for additional information.

Toss out your expectations. On Ibo clocks don't tick, the tides rule the land, and the bushy interior is drenched with culture. Embrace the differences. Roll with the waves. Ibo is remote from much-travelled regions, and plays by its own set of rules.

Relax

Ibo is a place of retreat. A place to separate the tangle. Spending time on Ibo is a chance to unwind and embrace a culture and lifestyle that hasn’t changed for hundreds of years. On Ibo we feel calm and carefree and we would like you to make yourselves at home at the lodge. Relax, unwind and soak up the history, romance and culture of one of the most fascinating islands in Africa.

Drink a lot

It's hot. You’ll end up sweating more, walking more and not realizing just how dehydrated you could be. Drink a lot of water and cool drinks.

Passports + Visas

All visitors must present a passport, with a minimum six months validity. It is advised that you carry certified copies of your passport and all travel documents, and always have either your passport or these copies with you.

Health

A course of anti-malaria tablets is strongly advised. A yellow fever certificate is required for those arriving from infected areas. There is an effective vaccine against yellow fever. Ask your doctor at least 10-14 days prior to travel to be vaccinated against yellow fever. We also advise you use mosquito repellent in the evenings. Please visit your health care provider 4-6 weeks before travelling.

What To Pack

Don't forget to take the camera, camcorder and binoculars. Stock up on batteries. A hat for protection from the sun and sunglasses, suntan lotions and lip-balm are also highly recommended. Spectacles (some people have trouble with contact lenses whilst travelling.) A pen for immigration formalities. A notebook and reading material for plane travel.

What To Wear

Short-sleeved shirts and slacks for men, blouses and skirts or informal dresses for women. Short shorts, vests and topless sunbathing is frowned upon, as Ibo is a predominantly Muslim culture. A pair of walking / running shoes, and a pair of ‘rocky’ type sandals or reef shoes. Evenings can get chilly so pack a warm sweater.

Travel Light

Air charter companies limit baggage to a 15 kilo maximum.

Customs

When departing Pemba you will be asked to open your luggage and your bags will be searched by an official. Please do not be alarmed, it is standard procedure.
