Giant Dhow |
||
![]() ![]() The giant dhow was built using traditional methods by our brother James Ashton. It is the largest dhow to be built on Ibo in the last 100 years. Nearing its completion we got wondering how to move her. Pretty soon the whole island was talking about it. After all, it’s a pretty small island, and it's a very big dhow! The islanders gossiped, and we deliberated. She is built out of solid teak and weighs10 tonnes. We tried to move her a good couple of times, but she wasn’t budging...! Modern MagicThe traditional way places mangrove poles under the keel, but we added a little bit of modern magic, applying cobra floor polish. Finally with 100 men and women, and plenty more spectators, and what felt like some divine intervention, in 5 hours and 20 minutes, she was floating beautifully. Tradition says the owners must also be submerged in the sea water, and then feasting, drumming and celebration must follow - so that all that sail in her are blessed. |
